Can Argentina Win Back to Back Copa America’s?

After going his whole career without an international trophy, Lionel Messi led Argentina to two major titles in the space of two years and this summer his first defence begins.

La Albiceleste are the favourites to retain their Copa America this summer, and it is hard to argue against them with the South American’s looking unstoppable in all competitions over the last few years.

Lucky Block’s latest Copa America odds have Argentina as short-priced 7/4 favourites to record back to back successes in July.

Argentina eased through the group stage in 2021 with 10 points from four games and they kept up their momentum with a comfortable 3-0 win Against Bolivia.

A tough semi-final followed for Argentina, who were held by Colombia who took the World Champions all the way to penalties. Emiliano Martinez was on his best form in the shootout and he saved penalties to send his country through to an inevitable final against Brazil.

Angel Di Maria scored the only goal in the final as Argentina were crowned Copa America champions for the first time since 1993. Messi finished the tournament on four goals with Argentina captain winning the golden boot ahead of Luis Diaz (also finished on four goals but Messi won based on assists tiebreak).

Since their Copa America success in 2021 Argentina have lost just two games – one against Saudi Arabia in a 2022 World Cup group stage upset and the other loss coming against Uruguay in a World cup qualifier at the end of 2023.

Argentina have won 11 out of a possible 12 matches since the World Cup win in 2022, and if their form in the last few years is anything to go by, back-to-back successes could be a real possibility.

Who Can Stop Lionel Messi’s Argentina?

No doubt Argentina’s biggest rivals this summer will yet again be Brazil – after the Selecao came so close to stopping Lionel Messi and co in 2021.

Brazil made easy work of the Copa America in 2021 up until the final, but Messi finally got his first international trophy following a tense final in which nine yellow cards were shown.

Having lost the final in 2021 Brazil will be out for revenge this year but their head-to-head record against their biggest rivals has been disappointing over the last few years, yielding no wins in the last four meetings.

Brazil’s form across all competitions has left plenty to be desired since they were knocked out of the World Cup quarter finals in 2022. Just one win in their last six will have Brazilian’s worried ahead of this summer’s Copa America.

Further down the market, there are plenty of contenders for the Copa America this year, with the likes of Uruguay, Mexico and Colombia all looking to upset the odds on the biggest stage.

Uruguay have beat both Argentina and Brazil in the past year, something that no other South American side has done, but their recent results suggest winning the Copa America remains a tall order.

Colombia have enjoyed some good results in preparation for this summer with six wins in a row – including an impressive victory over Brazil that has turned heads in South America with Los Cafeteros looking like serious contenders this year.

Even with all the other countries playing their best football this summer, it is hard to see anyone stopping Lionel Messi and Argentina recording back to back successes in the Copa America.
