Manchester City vs Newcastle Match Preview

Manchester City’s pursuit of a first ever quadruple in English football was cut short by this weekend’s opponents, who dealt them an agonising 1-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup back in September.

City will have to settle (!) for three trophies, just as they achieved last season. The Premier League – if they manage to win a fourth successive title – will be the first potential silverware, followed by the FA Cup which is decided on the 25th May.

That’s if Newcastle don’t have a say in the matter in this quarter-final, and having forced Manchester City into some of their closest encounters of the season with three single-goal defeats, they may be enthused to flip their own misfortunes around.

However, as has become customary in the final few months of the season, very few teams in world football are able to handle City.

Man City vs Newcastle Betting Tips – FA Cup Quarter-Final

Both Teams to Score? NO

Five of the last seven meetings between these two sides have resulted in an uncontested winner, with all but one of those swinging the way of Manchester City.

As tricky an opponent as Newcastle have proven to be for Pep Guardiola, there is an air of inevitability hanging over this weekend’s cup tie.

Not since December 2022 have City been beaten on home soil. This, coupled with the fact that Newcastle currently sit 14th in the Premier League when isolating results on the road leaves very little hope for the Magpies.

This is compounded by the face Newcastle have won just two of their last seven in normal time across all competitions, which includes a hard-fought 90 minute draw against Blackburn in the fifth round the send the tie to a penalty shootout.

City have also limited their opponents to one goal or less in their last seven home fixtures.

Manchester City Over 2.5 Goals

Our next tip predicts City to dish out another plateful of goals to add to Newcastle’s worrying defensive record of late.

Eddie Howe’s men, despite showing real attacking impetus in recent matches, have faltered due to their inability to keep the ball out of their own net.

This was evident last time out after allowing Chelsea to score three times, bringing their total goals conceded up to 17 across their last eight games.

That doesn’t included the three goals they conceded in the previous meeting between these two sides back in January.

Add to that the fact Manchester City are scoring at a rate of 2.42 goals per-game at the Etihad this season, and you are left with very little evidence that a Newcastle side low on confidence can prevent them from scoring.

Manchester City Team News

Kevin De Bruyne’s latest injury setback is the key piece of team news coming out of Manchester City.

Although the club say his groin injury is “minor” the Belgian is expected to sit out his nation’s upcoming international fixtures.

Elsewhere, Jack Grealish is also dealing with a groin injury of his own, while Ederson’s clash with Darwin Nunez will see him on the sidelines for at least this upcoming FA Cup tie.

Manchester City Predicted Line-Up: Ortega; Walker, Stones, Akanji, Ake; Silva, Rodri, Kovacic; Foden, Haaland, Doku

Newcastle Team News

An abundance of names were missing in training this week – the most notable being Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, Timo Livramento and Miguel Almiron.

The latter two are expected to be fit enough to feature on Saturday, but it may come too soon for Gordon, who may have one eye set on his first ever senior England call-up this month.

Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope, Joelinton and Callum Wilson all remain out of action.

Newcastle Predicted Line-Up: Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Botman, Burn; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Almiron.
