Manchester United vs Liverpool Match Preview

Although this is Manchester United’s 48th appearance in the FA Cup quarter-finals – the most of any side – they come up against a Liverpool team who have progressed in all but one of their previous 18 ties at this stage.

In what is undoubtedly English football’s most illustrious head-to-head, it may not carry the prestige of years gone-by but every meeting still feels momentous.

For Liverpool perhaps more so this season, with Jurgen Klopp’s curtain call so far being marked by a Carabao Cup triumph. They remain in contention on three fronts, and lofty ambitions of a quadruple can be further consolidated with a win on Sunday.

As for Erik Ten Hag, the Dutchman already has a domestic cup competition under his belt, but will be eager to add the world’s oldest trophy to his cabinet, particularly given it is the only competition Manchester United can still realistically win.

Not since the consecutive campaigns of 2003-04 and 2004-05 have United managed to reach the last four two seasons in a row. They have dealt Liverpool 10 FA Cup eliminations from the competition – more so than any side – so history shows there is reason to feel confident.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Betting Tips – FA Cup Quarter-Final

Nunez to Score & Liverpool to Win

United’s fortunes against Liverpool are far more positive when facing them on home soil, with all three of their previous wins over them coming at home, albeit very sporadically.

Despite this, all recent form and recent history points towards a Liverpool win given United have failed to even score against Liverpool in four of their past five meetings.

That of course means this weekend’s visitors are strongly favoured to progress, so our selection combines a victory with a goalscoring tip to try and unearth value.

Darwin Nunez has eight goals in last 10 – the kind of form that sees him living up to the hefty price tag the followed him to Liverpool. The Uruguayan is a constant, needling threat for any opposition, and the kind of presence that can enjoy success against an inconsistent United defence.

Both Teams to Score

However, that isn’t to say we don’t expect United to cause Liverpool problems of their own.

For all Liverpool’s stellar form across all competitions, they have been prone to conceding – even in games they have won by considerable margins.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have only kept four clean sheets across their last 15 games. United should have several names returning fit, including top scorer Rasmus Hojlund, so expect the home crowd and the players alike to be enthused by the enormity of this fixture.

Manchester United Team News

Rasmus Hojlund, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all expected to be declared fit enough for Sunday’s fixture.

This should ease the world load on veteran Jonny Evans, who had been struggling with a muscle problem, as well as Victor Lindelof who has been forced to deputise at full-back in recent weeks.

It appears to have come too soon for Mason Mount, who despite returning to training this week, is still recovering from a long-term lay-off.

Manchester United Predicted Line-Up: Onana; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Lindelof; Mainoo, Casemiro; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund

Liverpool Team News

Conor Bradley is expected to be fit enough to keep his place at right-back despite Jurgen Klopp admitting he had some swelling from midweek’s Europa League victory.

Ibrahima Konate is also a major doubt having skipped training, but could be a late inclusion subject to a late fitness test.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Alisson, Diogo Jota, Thiago, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak, and Joel Matip are all ruled out.

Liverpool Predicted Line-Up: Kelleher; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez; Mac Allister, Endo, Szoboszlai; Salah, Nunez, Diaz
